The Varsity Review was an undergraduate literary magazine at Columbia University in the early 20th century. Lionel Trilling, John Dewey, Jacques Barzun, Mark Van Doren, are a few of the storied scholars, writers, and students who contributed to the original magazine. In a catholic fashion, they published pieces both high- and lowbrow, poetry and prose, from members all across the Columbia community. While there are many active literary magazines at Columbia today, few encompass the wide reach of Columbia’s literary milieu, past and present. The mission of the revived The Varsity Review is much the same as it was then: to publish and republish material that tries to live up to Columbia University’s sui generis literary tradition, reaching as far and wide as possible.December 1923 Cover,
